Chapter 14 part 1

In this chapter we learned how the Europeans wanted in on the Indian Ocean Trade and how maneuvered their way into it.

The Portuguese:

The Portuguese made their way into the Indian ocean trade by technically practicing piracy. What the Portuguese did was find areas that they knew they could take over, take them over, and then start taxing merchants. The Portuguese, when looking for land to take over, went for land near the shore of the Indian Ocean, so that they would include themselves in the trade.

The Spaniards:

Spain got into the Indian Ocean trade by stealing land. The spaniards stole land from the Philippines. They went into the Philippines when they didn't have a leader, and took over. Once in the Philippines, the spaniards imposed christianity onto all of the Philippine folks there. The spaniards claimed the large amounts of silver that the Philippines had as theirs and made their way into the Indian Ocean trade. While in control the Philippines, Chinese and Japanese people were interested in the the Philippines, so when they went there, the spaniards tried imposing christianity on them too. However, the Chinese weren't feeling this which caused harsh treatment from the spaniards and Philippine people.

The Dutch and British:

The dutch and British used the same tactic to get into the Indian Ocean trade. They made private companies that were backed up by the government, so that they could get into this trade network and make them some good money. The dutch made the Dutch east India company which controlled local trade and made cloves that they sold for big profit. The British made the British East India company. Such an original company name, am I right lol. But this company that the British made established trade settlements in India, and produced cotton textile which they sold to England.

Silver:

Silver was really valuable back then and each country had its own little way of using it. The Chinese used silver to pay for taxes. This caused an outbreak for the need of silver by europeans, because they wanted in on the trade and wanted to buy asian goods. The Japanese used silver to unify their country and get them back on track.

Fur:

In Europe there wasn't a lot of animals that gave quality fur, so when they slid down to America, they were in need and were looking for some fur. The native Americans were the ones who would hunt and get the fur off animals. So the native Americans traded and sold fur to these colonizers for some guns and alcohol. Guns and alcohol are not a good mix, and this showed in the Native American population. They were dying off because they were lightweights when it came down to alcohol because they never had it in America before the europeans came. While this was happening in America, Russia was also in search for some fur too, which they soon found in Siberia. There were same consequences for trading fur in Siberia like there were in America. However, Russia also started to tax Siberia!
