Chapter 19

In this chapter we learned about how the British sold the Chinese opium during the 1800's. We also learned about how china was a successful state but soon collapsed and became very reliant and dependent on Europe. There were many revolution that took place in china at this time. One of these revolutions was the Taiping Uprising. In this revolution the main goals were to industrialize china and to empower women and give equalize them compared to men. However, this was taken down as there was division in leadership. During this time in China, the west found a market for opium in china and began to supplying China with opium which led to hella Chinese becoming addicted. The Chinese government took note of the opium problem and put restrictions on opium and opium use, but when they did this the British used military force to end the restrictions and bring the opium flow back in china, while gaining access to ports in china for trading. This made me think of how Ronald Reagan planted drugs in black communities, and both of these occasions led to the profit of the white man. However, there were more revolutions happening in china at this time, like the boxer uprising. In this uprising, militias started going round china and started killing foreigners. This revolution was demolished by europeans and the Chinese and Japanese had to pay some fat fines.

In this chapter we also learned about the ottoman empire. The ottoman empire during this time had a good sized empire, but was losing some of their territories. They lost some of their territories to Europe and European power. Then other parts of the Ottoman Empire like Siberia and Greece gained independence and were backed up by Europe. The ottoman empire started to then copy some aspects of the west and that led to more factories, settlement of agricultural land, more schools, and more opportunities for women.

In this chapter we also learned about Japan. Japan in this time was able to modernize and become an imperialist country. The shogun was able to create peace that lasted many centuries. The shogun did this by controlling the daimyo and enforcing strict rules. This peace led to good economics in Japan and urban development.
