Chapter 21

In this chapter we learned that places in the world took on communism because it promised freedom from inequality, oppression, and exploitation. However, communism challenged western democracy, which led to an arms race between Russia and USA.

During this time, a bunch of countries underwent revolutions to become communist. Russia joined the Eastern European communist countries in the Warsaw pact. Then Russia and china formed a treaty called the friendship treaty of 1950.

WW1 caused hella Russian people to be upset and caused them to make their own political parties and overthrow the elites.

In china the communist started off small but gained back up from rural workers and women. in Russia and china they created laws to empower women more, such as, legalizing divorce, making marriage more of a choice to women, and easier hiring for women. Both of these governments redistributed land from the landlords to give to peasants. There was an increase in urbanization, higher number of educated people, and higher growth of an elite class. However, there were huge industrial projects that led to environmental devastation.

Division between Eastern and Western Europe was called the iron curtain.

Russia and the US had an arms race but never used the weapons against each other but more just wanted alliances from other countries. China and Russia couldn't catch up economically to capitalist countries.

In this chapter hella stuff went down for real. I learned how WW1 was basically just Europe fighting itself which resulted in the great depression, the rise of nazi Germany, and WW2. So after Europe was done fighting themselves, there was a new super power of the west and it was the USA. However, the USA was facing it's own problems as they were deep into the Great Depression. During the Great Depression, banks closed, there was a drop in world trade, and hella people became unemployed. While this was happening in the US, Italy was outbreaking in racism, Mussolini came to power, and bad things were happening in Germany. Chapter 16 part 1

In this first part of chapter 16, we learned about revolutions all around the world and how these revolutions were an inspiration for other revolutions. North American Revolution: The American revolution started in 1756 and ended in 1783. The purpose of this revolution was for the 13 colonies to claim independence from Britain's rule.  When Britain had control over the 13 colonies they were imposing heavy taxes on people living in the colonies. The people of the 13 colonies did not like this and they decided to go to war with Britain so that they can live freely and become more democratic. This revolution was important and unique because a new tactic of war was introduced known as guerrilla warfare. This revolution was just one of the many to start and it inspired many others. Chapter 14 part 2

In this section of chapter 14, we learned about the Atlantic Slave trade Millions of beautiful Africans were stripped of everything they had because the Europeans needed someone to do their work for them. Europeans invaded Africa and snatched people from their families and treated them inhumane and harshly. When in the middle passage Africans died in large amount of numbers from terrible treatment, some of these beautiful souls decided to commit suicide because dying was better than living in captivity. But one of the wild things I learned in this chapter that had me shook was that African elites would sometimes trade salves to europeans in exchange for tobacco, gunpowder, and alcohol.
